Italian Women Win Against Spain
Castello, ITALY: Junior and senior Italian teams put on an impressive display of gymnastics Saturday to defeat
a visiting Spanish team.
The juniors were led by Silvia Zanolo (53.500), Gloria Riva (52.900), and Martina Danioni (52.800)
in posting a team total of 160.250,
more than six points higher than the young Spaniards (154.150). Mercedes Alcaide
was the top Spanish junior, with 52.000 for fourth
all around.
In a preview of the coming European Championships, Italy established themself as a team to watch in the senior field,
scoring 172.750, The team scored 43.150 or higher on all but vault (42.550), where they were
without the reigning European champion Francesca Benolli, and the lowest counting scores for the day were two 13.900s.
Vanessa Ferrari (ITA) made her senior international debut, winning the all around convincingly and showing few signs of the
hand injury that slowed her training at the end of 2005. She posted A scores of 6.600 on bars, where she shows a Comaneci and Jäger,
and 6.500 on beam (with a back full), and a total of 59.450 for the day. Spain's Lenika de Simone was second with 57.000, and another new senior,
Italy's Lia Parolari, was third at 56.700.
