Gafuik to represent Canada in London
National champion Nathan Gafuik has earned the nomination to represent Canada at this summer’s Olympic Games in London.
After the Canadian men failed to qualify a complete team, criteria based on results at National Championships and Challenger Cup events in Osijek, Maribor, and Ghent were set for the selection of the lone representative. With 11 gymnasts originally fighting for the spot, this weekend’s competition in Ghent saw the field narrowed to Jackson Payne, Jayd Lukenchuk, and Mathieu Csukassy chasing the standard Gafuik had established at the national championships.
For Gafuik, who turns 27 on Tuesday, London will mark his second Olympics. Four years ago in Beijing, he was 17th in the all around final. He has also been a member of every Canadian World Championship team since 2006.
