Maria Livchikova and Oleg Vernayev took the all-around titles at the Ukrainian Championships, held 12-16 June in Kirovograd. Livchikova, who suffered a knee injury in training at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, scored 56.050 to take the title ahead of Darina Mateveyeva (54.625/born in 1997 and thus not age-eliglbe until next year) and Yevgenia Cherniy (53.725). Livchikova’s highest score came on balance beam (5.9/14.475). The knee injury not only kept her out of the World championships last year but also killed her chances of competing at the Olympics. The Ukrainian women failed to qualify a team to the Test Event, which served as the second – and final- Olympic qualifier. The rules dictate that for federations that did not qualify a team to the Test Event the Olympic berths earned at the Test Event are nominative. Since Livchikova was unable to compete due to injury, she was unable to contend for an Olympic place. Ukraine sent Natalia Kononenko and Angelina Kysla to the Test Event and is free to send either gymnast to the Olympics. Kononenko only placed eight all-around (50.525) but took the silver medal on bars with a 6.7 D score. Kysla, who suffered a serious knee injury in podium training at the 2010 World Championships, finished fifth on vault and fourth on floor.

Missing from the men’s competition was standout Mykola Kuksenkov, who suffered a foot injury in May that kept him out the European Championships. Unlike their women, the Ukrainian men have been doing well this cycle with a young team placing fifth in Tokyo. Oleg Vernayev scored 90.300 to take the all-around gold with a 16.40 (7.0 ) on vault and a 15.80 (7.0)  on parallel bars. Oleg Stepko placed second by almost three points (87.650).
